He chose a spot of ground on which no plants had been sown, and there he made a hole large and deep enough to admit the patient up to the chin. The interstices of the pit were then carefully filled up with the fresh mould, so that the earth might everywhere come in contact with the patient’s body. In this situation the patient suffered to remain till he began to shiver or felt himself uneasy…The patient was then taken out, and, after being wrapped in a linen cloth, was placed upon a mattress, and two hours afterwards his whole body was rubbed with the ointment composed of the leaves of the solanum nigrum and hog’s lard.

That human beings should be generated on mountains or in the air or the sea is no great wonder; for their substance and nurture and nature is the cause. But that there should be feathered creatures, called therefore the Fire-Born, generated from fire and living in it and, that they should thrive and fly about here and there – that is astonishing. 

They say the putrefying marrow from the spine of a human corpse turns into a serpent and the reptile issues forth and crawls off alive, the most savage of beings from the tamest. But the rest of a good and noble man remains unchanged, and has peace for its reward; also the spirits of such men are praised and sung by the wise. The spines of bad men, however, breed like things after death. 

Leucippe, Arsippe, and Alcithoë, the daughters of Minyas, out of love for their husbands, held themselves aloof from the orgiastic rites of Dionysus and attended to their weaving and to punish their obstinacy, the god brought madness upon the sisters, so that they tore to pieces the son of Leucippe; in consequence of which deed of blood they were pursued by the Maenads.
